I asked Epson sales support on the difference between these, and they told me the print mechanism and quality of the Artisan 50 and 710 are exactly the same, while the 1400 would have a better quality.

There are a good number of very positive reviews on the Epson 1400 printer, but the Artisans being new and at least theoretically having the same technology as 1400 were a big question mark, so I tried to find that out by asking people who might know the answer.Ħ.

The big story here is the 1400, which can be had for $266 from Amazon (no tax and shipping) and there is $100 rebate from Epson on it, bringing its price down to $ Artisan 50 seems to be holding at $99, the 710 can be had for $20ish more. Based on these, I limited my options to three models: Epson Artisan 50, Epson Artisan 710 (both printing upto 8.5"x11") and Epson Stylus photo 1400 (which pritns as large as 13" x 19" and even 13" x 44"). Since the Epsons are more often in use with a third party CISS system, the quality of those 3rd party inks become quite important (more on this later).ĥ. Both the ink type and how much you print have an effect on this. The Canon's seem to have a bit of better reputation here. I'd like the printer to be easily compatible with a continuous ink supply system (CISS or CIS). Printing enlargements would be a plus, but 8x10 would be the smallest size I'd be ok with.Ģ. I was looking for a small printer in sub $200 range. Here I will post my findings and prices accurate as of Oct. If you'd like to read more details, continue reading. In summary I ended up purchasing an Epson 1400 and will strongly consider a bulk ink refill system from the inkjetMall. Like many other photographers entering the printing game, I was also confused with all the options available in inkjet printers.
